DUAL CONTROL CAR HIRE • EDINBURGH
Learners & Parents
Hire a dual-control car for extra practice or your driving test.
IMPORTANT HIRE INFORMATION
Before you book.
Please read the following information carefully before booking your dual-control hire car. We want your experience to be simple, safe and stress-free, so here’s everything you need to know before getting behind the wheel.
Learner Driver Eligibility
You must be at least 17 years old and hold a valid UK provisional driving licence.
If you have any penalty points, endorsements or previous driving convictions, please contact us before booking so we can check whether you’re eligible.
All learner drivers must be accompanied by an eligible supervising driver throughout their hire.
Supervising Driver Requirements
Your supervising driver must:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Have held a full UK driving licence for at least 3 years.
- Be legally allowed to supervise a learner driver.
- Remain with the learner throughout the hire.
We can only release the vehicle if your supervising driver holds a full driving licence that covers the category of vehicle being hired.
For example, a supervising driver with a full manual licence can supervise both manual and automatic vehicles, while someone with an automatic-only licence can only supervise an automatic vehicle.
If your supervising driver has any penalty points, endorsements or driving convictions, please contact us before booking.
Vehicle Occupancy
Only the learner driver and their approved supervising driver are allowed inside the vehicle during hire.
Friends, family members, children and other passengers are not permitted.
Driving Tests & Private Practice
Our dual-control cars can be hired for:
- Extra driving practice with an eligible supervising driver.
- Your practical driving test.
If you’re hiring a car for your driving test, please allow plenty of time to collect the vehicle, get comfortable with the controls and travel to your test centre.
We recommend booking enough time so you don’t feel rushed before your test.
Driving Licences & DVLA Share Codes
Both the learner driver and supervising driver must bring their valid driving licences and DVLA licence check codes when collecting the vehicle.
You can generate your check codes after booking, but please have them ready before arriving.
Get your DVLA check code →If either driver has penalty points, endorsements or driving convictions, please let us know in advance.
We may be unable to release the vehicle if the required documents or checks are missing.
Refundable Security Deposit
A £500 refundable security deposit is required when you collect the vehicle. You can pay by a valid credit or debit card.
If you purchase our optional £15 Damage & Liability Waiver, your security deposit is reduced to £250.
The deposit helps cover any charges you may be responsible for, including damage, parking fines, bus lane charges, PCNs and other costs under our Terms & Conditions.
Your deposit will normally be refunded within 7–10 days after the hire, subject to any applicable deductions. Your bank may take additional time to show the refund.
Accidents, Damage & Liability
Accidents can happen, and we understand that.
If the vehicle is involved in an accident or gets damaged during your hire, you may be responsible for up to £500 for eligible damage, depending on the circumstances, unless you’ve purchased our optional Damage & Liability Waiver, subject to its terms and exclusions.
Each incident will be assessed individually, and any charges will be explained in accordance with our rental agreement.
You must contact Turn2Learn as soon as possible if the vehicle is involved in an accident, damaged or affected by another incident.
Additional charges may apply for costs excluded from the standard damage liability limit or optional waiver.
Optional Damage & Liability Waiver
Drive with extra peace of mind.
For an additional £15, you can purchase our optional Damage & Liability Waiver.
The waiver removes your liability for eligible accidental vehicle damage, provided the accident was not caused by careless, reckless, dangerous or intentional driving, and the waiver conditions are met.
It also reduces your refundable security deposit from £500 to £250.
What’s not covered?
- Parking fines, PCNs, speeding fines and bus lane charges.
- Misfuelling (charges apply; see our Terms & Conditions).
- Lost, stolen or damaged keys.
- Damage caused by negligence, misuse or prohibited driving.
- Other costs excluded under our rental Terms & Conditions.
The waiver does not remove your responsibility to drive safely or follow the law.
Fuel Policy — Full to Full
Your hire car will be provided with a full tank of fuel. Please return it with a full tank.
If the vehicle is returned without a full tank, we will charge you for the missing fuel plus a £20 administration fee.
Please use the correct fuel type. You will be responsible for any costs resulting from putting the wrong fuel in the vehicle.
Misfuelling: Charges apply. See our Terms & Conditions.
Vehicle Collection & Documentation
All vehicle collections are by appointment only.
We do not operate a walk-in rental desk. Once your booking has been confirmed, we’ll provide your collection instructions and agreed meeting location.

If your plans change, please contact us as early as possible.
Safe & Responsible Driving
Both the learner driver and supervising driver must follow UK road traffic laws and our rental conditions throughout the hire.
The supervising driver must remain alert and focused on supervising the learner.
They must not use a mobile phone, drink alcohol or engage in anything that could distract them or affect their ability to supervise safely.
Unsafe driving, negligence or misuse of the vehicle may result in additional charges or the hire being ended.

All hire vehicles are fitted with CCTV cameras for safety, security and insurance purposes.
Cameras must remain switched on throughout the hire period and must not be switched off, covered, disconnected or tampered with.
